Tooth decay prevention and periodontal diseases

Periodontal disease
The periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease caused by the microorganisms in the bacterial plaque. This disease affects the periodontium, the structures that surround the tooth and keep it sealed to the tooth. If not cured, the infection may continue in depth: the bone tissue is gradually destroyed, the gingiva withdraws, usually only in part, from the tooth, creating pockets into which the bacteria accumulate; the teeth gradually lose their support, becoming more and more mobile.
How to cure it
In order for the therapy to succeed the improvement of oral hygiene is necessary, and the interruption of habits like smoking is advisable, for they may reduce the possibility of success of the therapy.
The periodontal therapies can be surgical or non-surgical, depending on the specific medical case.
The tartar removal, the root planing (the removal of the plaque and the tartar from the teeth both above and below the gingival level) and the removal of local irritating causes that help the accumulation of plaque (like teeth fillings or artificial crowns), are fundamental to fight efficiently the periodontal disease.
